How to Write a CV With No Work Experience (East Africa)

Every professional started with an empty CV. If you've just finished secondary school, college, or university and have no formal work experience, you can still write a CV that gets noticed. The trick is to show potential, not just history.

Lead with a strong summary, not an apology

Don't start with "I have no experience but…". Open with who you are and what you offer: "Motivated Business Administration graduate with strong analytical and communication skills, seeking an entry-level role in operations." Confidence, not apology.

Turn what you HAVE done into experience

You have more than you think. Include:

Use achievement language

Instead of "was part of a group project," write "led a 4-person team to design a mobile-money savings concept, presented to a panel and scored top marks." Numbers and verbs make a student CV sound professional.

Highlight education and skills

With little work history, your education section moves up and does more work. Include your grade, relevant coursework, and any awards. Then list skills employers want — computer literacy, communication, teamwork, plus any tools you know (Excel, social media, basic accounting).

Keep it to one page

A first CV should be one clean page. Quality over quantity — a focused single page beats two padded ones.
