CV Format for Kenya: What Recruiters Actually Expect

If you're applying for jobs in Kenya, your CV format matters as much as your experience. Recruiters in Nairobi often receive hundreds of applications per role and spend seconds on each. A clean, expected format keeps you in the pile; an unusual one gets you skipped. Here's exactly what Kenyan employers expect in 2026.

The right length: 2 pages, not 5

The most common mistake we see is a CV that is far too long. For most roles in Kenya, two pages is ideal. Fresh graduates should aim for one. Save the detail for the interview — the CV's job is to get you there, not to tell your whole story.

The structure Kenyan recruiters expect

Header: full name, phone (with +254), email, location (town/city), and a LinkedIn link.

Professional summary: 2–3 lines naming your role, years of experience, and one standout achievement.

Work experience: most recent first, with your title, employer, dates, and 3–5 achievement bullets each.

Education: degree, institution, year, and grade (First Class, Second Upper, etc. — Kenyan employers do look at this).

Skills: 8–15 relevant skills, mixing technical and soft skills.

Certifications & referees: professional certs (CPA, CISA, etc.) and referees available on request.

Outdated habits to drop

Kenyan CV conventions have modernised. These once-normal items now make you look out of date:

A passport photo — not needed and can invite bias. Leave it off unless specifically requested.

Marital status, religion, ID number, and date of birth — remove them all.

"Curriculum Vitae" as a title — your name is the title.

A long "career objective" full of clichés — replace it with a sharp professional summary.
